CONCORD, N.H.- Three top Republicans want State Rep. Ellen Read D-Newmarket removed from her position following claims she made in a pair of traffic stops in which she said she’s not subject to the penalty of law because she’s a member of the New Hampshire House.

House Deputy Majority Leader Joe Sweeney, R-Salem, House Election Laws Committee Chairman Ross Berry, R-Weare, and Housing Committee Chairman Joe Alexander, R-Goffstown, all says Read has disqualified herself from continuing to remain in the House after she claimed “legislative privilege” allows her the ability to avoid having to pay fines for speeding on two separate occasions at or near 100 mph along I-93.

This latest call comes after Read was first pulled over in December of 2024 for doing 107mph, even though she claims she was only doing 85mph in a 65-mph zone and told a member of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s office New Hampshire’s Constitution says lawmakers can’t be arrested going to or coming from the State House.

Out of that interaction Read reportedly paid a fine and then was pulled over for a second time in June of 2025 in which she received a ticket for doing 92 in a 65-mph zone in Londonderry.

Read has yet to comment on the matter, meanwhile her attorney Dana Albrecht, claims his client never tried to use the constitutional privilege to suggest she was “above the law.”
