CONCORD, N.H.- Republicans are pushing back against the Democratic National Committee by drafting a bill that ties primary participation to the November ballot for presidential nominees.

Rep. Joe Sweeney, R-Salem is drafting legislation that would require the national chair of each political party to file certification which states that their party recognizes New Hampshire’s first in the nation primary, which would be due before a presidential election.

Under the bill the Secretary of State’s office would review it and the party would have months to change course in the event any penalties are issued, before they can take effect.

In the event a political party declines to file with the state it would barred from nominating the state’s presidential electors, nor would they have a party label on the general election ballot and their candidate’s name would no longer appear automatically on the ballot.

In the event a party opts not follow procedure and a candidate still wanted to appear on the ballot, that candidate would be forced to gather 3,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot like a 3rd party candidate would.
