Attorney General’s office rules Tuesday’s fire in Nashua a suicide-murder

MANCHESTER, N.H.- The Attorney General’s office says autopsies have confirmed the identities of two men killed in a two-alarm fire Tuesday in Nashua, in which they believe was started by one man looking to take his own life.

Investigators say both Gerald Gutekuns,80, and Scott Thomas,66, died from smoke inhalation.

Authorities believe Gutekuns locked the door to his apartment and started the fire with no plan to escape. Thomas meanwhile was pulled from the fire and taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the building’s landlord and Gutekuns were caught up in a dispute over rent and that Gutekuns even took the matter to court days before the fire, which resulted in a judge dismissing the case.
