Residents urge Manchester Aldermen to support schools during budget hearing

MANCHESTER, NH – Area residents voiced their support and urged Alderman to override the city’s tax cap in support of local schools during a recent public hearing.

Tuesday evening citizens attending Mayor Jay Ruais’ public hearing for the city’s proposed $434 million spending proposal for Fiscal year 2027 spoke up in favor of overriding the tax cap.

Under Ruais’ proposed budget most departments would see a 2% decrease in available funding, when compared to the 2026 budget.

However, it should be noted that the Police Department would not be subjected to a reduction, as the department is currently trying to fill a couple dozen vacancies.

According to the budget, the allotment for funding city schools, while $3 million more than last year’s budget still comes in $525,951 less than the tax-compliant-budget school board members requested.

A vote to override the city’s tax cap would need the support of 10 of the 14 aldermen.
