Imagine spending years dreaming about walking into the Grand Ole Opry circle.

Then imagine finally getting there on the night country music is saying goodbye to Dolly Parton.

That’s what happened to rising country singer Belle Frantz Saturday night.

Frantz made her Grand Ole Opry debut on August 29 during the Opry’s special tribute to Dolly Parton, who died last week at 80.

For a young artist who built her sound around the country music of earlier generations, it was already a huge moment.

Then it became something considerably more emotional.

Frantz used part of her debut to honor Dolly, an artist she says helped give her confidence to make the kind of country music she actually wanted to make.

When she finished, the Opry audience stood.

And Frantz couldn’t immediately continue.

She had to stop and collect herself before telling the crowd that she would remember the moment for the rest of her life.

That’s the kind of thing that explains why an Opry debut still matters.

There are bigger stages.

There are arenas with more people.

There are festivals with enormous crowds.

But there’s only one wooden circle cut from the stage of the old Ryman Auditorium sitting in the middle of the Grand Ole Opry stage.

And for generations of country singers, standing inside it has meant something different.

Frantz’s debut happened during an especially emotional Opry show.

The entire night was dedicated to Dolly, with performances from Carly Pearce, Kathy Mattea, Molly Tuttle, Dan Tyminski, Channing Wilson and others. Dolly’s niece Jada Star also performed, and Jelly Roll made a surprise appearance as the artists gathered for “9 to 5.”

A portion of the night’s ticket sales also went to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

For Frantz, though, there was another layer to it.

Young country singers often talk about respecting the legends who came before them.

Saturday night, she actually found herself standing on the same stage where Dolly had first performed when she was just 13 years old.

One generation was being remembered.

Another was walking into the circle for the first time.

That’s country music history happening in real time.
